About the museum

The Citadella is a fortification on Gellért Hill. In its western artillery tower the exhibition A Szabadság Bástyája (The Bastion of Freedom), covering more than 1,700 square metres, has been set up. The central idea of the exhibition is that whoever holds the hill also holds the country.

The exhibition begins with the account of the dream of Emese, mother of Prince Álmos, and spans some thirteen centuries up to the present. Visitors move from era to era: from the Hungarian Conquest and the founding of the state through Ottoman and Habsburg rule, the Kuruc movements and the 1848–49 Revolution, to the world wars, Trianon, the Soviet occupation, the 1956 Revolution and the change of regime. The historical role of women receives special emphasis.

The exhibition includes interactive elements, audiovisual presentations, a digital map table, a large statue of a king and bells hanging from the ceiling. The admission ticket also gives access, through the exhibition, to the Tetőkert 360 roof garden and the Rondella terrace; the Citadella park and the promenade can be visited free of charge during opening hours.
