About the museum

The ship was built in 1913 by the Ganz-Danubius shipyard in Újpest and entered service originally as the Ferencz Ferdinánd főherczeg (Archduke Ferencz Ferdinánd). It was renamed several times over the decades: from 1919 it was called Rigó, from 1930 Leányfalu, and from 1955 Kossuth. It served on the Danube for sixty-five years and was withdrawn from service in 1978.

The steamer was not broken up: Ganz-Danubius restored it, and in 1984 it entered the collection of the Transport Museum. Since 1985 it has been moored at the Vigadó tér boat landing on the Pest embankment, near the Chain Bridge. During the conversions the funnel and the wheelhouse were moved and the coal-heating equipment was changed, but the steam engine, the paddle wheels and the steam steering gear are still original today.

The ship belongs to the Magyar Műszaki és Közlekedési Múzeum (Hungarian Museum of Technology and Transport). It once housed an exhibition on the history of Danube navigation and also operated as a museum and restaurant ship. It is currently not open to visitors for technical reasons and is closed for an indefinite period.
