About the museum

The Orvos- és Gyógyszerészettörténeti Gyűjtemény (Medical and Pharmacy History Collection) in Kecskemét was founded in January 1985 by merging the Bács-Kiskun Megyei Gyógyszerészettörténeti Szakgyűjtemény (Bács-Kiskun County Pharmacy History Collection) and the County Medical History Collection and transferring them to the museum. Each of the two collections is the result of the persistent work of one specialist.

Nándor Lóránd, a pharmacist, began in 1966 to search the county's pharmacies for old furniture, vessels, discarded equipment and documents; by 1968 the holdings were already substantial, and from this the Pharmacy History Collection took shape. Aladár Réthy, chief laboratory physician, founded the Medical History Collection. The collection's national significance lies in the fact that, among the medical instruments used in the first half of the 20th century, it preserves pieces that have survived nowhere else in the country.

The two merged collections are housed in a peasant-burgher townhouse, which already appears on the town's map of 1810. The special feature of the long building is its two vaulted porches, the so-called kódisállás.

Highlights

  • Pharmacy wooden jars, liquid bottles, powder jars and ointment pots
  • Medical instruments of the first half of the 20th century
  • Ars Medicinae – the art of healing: old woodcuts and copperplate prints
  • House with vaulted porch, dating from before 1810

Permanent exhibition

  • Ars Medicinae – A gyógyítás művészete – The most beautiful objects in the collection are the black-and-white woodcuts and copperplate prints from the 14th to 18th centuries, and the coloured woodcuts, from the Kalocsai Főszékesegyházi Könyvtár (Kalocsa Cathedral Library).
