Magyar Naiv Művészek Gyűjteménye

Opening hoursAdmission HUF 600

About the museum

The Magyar Naiv Művészek Gyűjteménye (Collection of Hungarian Naive Artists) opened in Kecskemét in September 1976 as a museum with a national collecting remit, unique in Hungary. It was founded on the private collection and donation of film director Moldován Domokos. In later decades the collection grew by taking over the naive art holdings of the Magyar Nemzeti Galéria and the Népművelési Intézet, and by discovering new artists.

The paintings and sculptures on display were made from many kinds of materials and techniques; their themes are closely tied to the everyday life and festivals of people working in farming, animal husbandry and crafts. The collection is housed in a listed building in the heart of the town, in the middle of a large courtyard surrounded by white walls.

The Bánó-ház went through several building periods. The low western wing was built in the mid-18th century in the former farm courtyard, and the tall, larger house with a hipped roof was joined to it at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The room layout of a Great Plain market-town house, with its room–kitchen–pantry arrangement, is still recognisable, and the kitchen with a free-standing chimney has survived.
