About the museum
The parents of Petőfi Sándor, Petrovics István and Hrúz Mária, moved from Szabadszállás to Kiskőrös on 1 November 1821, where they rented the three-compartment, wattle-and-daub, reed-roofed house with an open chimney, built at the end of the 1780s. The poet was born here. The furnished birthplace seen today evokes everyday life in the first third of the 19th century; its furniture was influenced by the opinions of famous visitors, among them Liszt Ferenc, Babits Mihály, Kosztolányi Dezső and Móricz Zsigmond. At the 1948–49 centenary celebrations it was proposed that the whole building should become a museum.
Next to the birthplace operates an institutional complex called the Petőfi Szülőház és Emlékmúzeum (Petőfi Birthplace and Memorial Museum). On the ground floor of the memorial museum, the permanent exhibition “7 év” (7 Years) presents Petőfi’s creative period between 1842 and 1849 with animations, projections and audio material, while the upper gallery hosts temporary exhibitions. The art and ethnographic display room houses contemporary works on Petőfi themes and objects of the Slovak community of Kiskőrös.
The Szlovák Tájház (Slovak Folk House) presents the life and culture of the local middle peasantry in the 19th century, while the neighbouring Petőfi Műfordítói Szoborpark (Petőfi Translators’ Sculpture Park) was created in 1986 by the Országos Petőfi Sándor Társaság (National Petőfi Sándor Society). The park currently has 18 sculptures commemorating Petőfi’s foreign translators.
