About the museum
The building of the Tájház is a typical Great Plain peasant house and has been an exhibition venue since 1967; it is maintained by the local council and the German minority self-government. Its founder and first custodian was the German-language teacher Rétfalvi Teofil. The house was arranged as a local history collection by the museologist Bárth János, and since 1975 it has also been registered as a minority house. The modern history of Harta began in 1723, when German families arrived from Hessen-Pfalz (Hesse-Palatinate) and Württemberg. In the courtyard stand Roman stones and kopjafa (carved wooden grave posts); in the barn are old farming tools. In three rooms of the house are the famous painted Harta furniture, and in the original smoky kitchen is the traditional furnishing. The Harta folk costume is distinctive; among its elements is the beaded headdress called “haupt”, from which a small collection has been assembled. The elderberry press is the emblem of the Bodzaünnep (Elderberry Festival) held in September.
