About the museum
The Mézeskalács Múzeum in Szekszárd presents the crafts practised by the Petrits family over several generations. The family business can be traced back to 1825, and the knowledge of making gingerbread, candles and sweets was passed on from father to son. The tools gathered over six generations formed the original private collection, which became the basis of the museum.
The exhibition displays gingerbread-making tools, including centuries-old carved wooden printing boards (ütőfa) and decorating cones, objects showing the methods of making dipped, moulded, drawn and poured candles, and the machines for making sweets and lollipops, as well as the tools used for the Diana sweet and for traditional szaloncukor (Christmas tree sweets). Gingerbread hearts, hussars and dolls, and decorative candles complete the display. A short musical film illustrates how the tools are used.
The museum also offers active participation: visitors can decorate gingerbread, make candles from beeswax sheets and play a discovery game, and a member of the Petrits family can give a personal tour. The museum is also part of the local and county heritage registers of Szekszárd and Tolna County.
