About the museum
The museum was founded by Wosinsky Mór, archaeologist, Catholic priest and bibliophile scholar, who, with the support of Count Apponyi Sándor, set himself the goal of creating a museum for Tolna County. The first exhibition opened in 1896, the millennium year, in a few rooms of the Szekszárd upper grammar school. The basis of his collection was mainly archaeological material, including relics of the Lengyel culture.
The neo-Renaissance museum palace was designed by Herzog Fülöp and Schickedanz Albert, who also conceived the Museum of Fine Arts (Szépművészeti Múzeum) and the Műcsarnok (Kunsthalle) in Budapest. It opened in 1902, and among the county museums it is the only building originally built for museum purposes. In front of the building on Szent István tér stands Farkas Pál’s bronze bust of Wosinsky Mór, surrounded by Roman altar stones recovered from the bed of the Danube.
The institution has four permanent exhibitions: the Látványtár’s journey through time from 20th-century objects back to the Bronze Age, the upper-floor “Megelevenedett képek” (Pictures Brought to Life) – a small town at the turn of the century, the “Örökségünk” (Our Heritage) – centuries of Tolna County, and the children’s Pincemúzeum (Cellar Museum). Temporary exhibitions open on the ground floor. The Wosinsky Mór Múzeum also includes, in Szekszárd, the Babits Mihály Emlékház (Babits Mihály Memorial House), the Irodalom Háza – Mészöly Miklós Emlékház (House of Literature – Mészöly Miklós Memorial House) and the County Hall exhibition.
