About the museum

The museum bears the name of Széchenyi Zsigmond and is housed in the Grassalkovich Castle in Hatvan. The castle is the most important listed monument in Hatvan; it was built by Grassalkovich (I.) Antal between 1754 and 1757 and extended in 1763. It stands on the site of the remains of a medieval castle, but the family mainly used the palace in Gödöllő. The central storeyed section was built by Oraschek Ignác, and the side wings by Jung József.

The estate was later bought by Sina György and his son, and in 1867 it was acquired by the Hatvany-Deutsch family. Around 1890 they converted it into a residential château, and in the 1910s it was renovated in neo-Baroque style. After the Second World War it housed a military hospital and a secondary school, and from 1961 a hospital; in 1979 it was declared dangerous to life and closed. After external renovation, the complete reconstruction was carried out with the support of the North Hungarian Operational Programme.

The renovated castle houses permanent and temporary exhibitions, which can be seen on several floors. The building is fully accessible, with a lift and an accessible toilet, and the exhibition features multimedia and sensory devices, games and museum education sessions, including those for people with disabilities, blind and partially sighted visitors.
