Turai Tájház

Reed-roofed, clay-walled middle-peasant farmstead in Tura, with a best room, an open-chimney kitchen, folk-costume dolls and farm buildings.

About the museum

The Turai Tájház is located at the far end of the village’s main road, towards Bag–Galgahévíz, and opened on 15 October 1989. In spring 1985 the house, built at the turn of the century and left without an heir, was taken into state ownership and placed under the care of the village council. The renovation of the building was carried out by a volunteer working group led by the Kék Szivárvány Népdalkör (Blue Rainbow Folk Song Circle), which operates in the cultural centre; most of the exhibition and inventory material was collected by Szilágyi Gáborné, the first custodian.

The reed-roofed house with clay walls and a plank gable presents a traditional three-part middle-peasant dwelling: a best room facing the street, with a domed stove (búboskemence), a made-up bed, a tulip chest (tulipánosláda) and a holy corner (szent sarok); an open-chimney kitchen; and a rear house with a loom (szövőszék), a reed comb (ropka) and a distaff (guzsaly), with folk-costume dolls and folk children’s games. In the courtyard pantry there are wine barrels and the equipment for pig slaughtering; in the stable, the manger and animal-husbandry tools; and in the rear shed, the tools for ploughing, sowing and hemp cultivation.
