Petőfi Múzeum

The Petőfi Múzeum in Aszód presents the heritage of the Galga valley and the memory of Sándor Petőfi, who studied here, in the former Lutheran grammar school building.

Opening hoursAdmission HUF 2,000

About the museum

The museum is housed in the former Evangelical scola latina and lower-secondary school building, which was built between 1769 and 1771 with the financial support of the Evangelical Church and the Podmaniczky family. The school was extended with an upper storey in 1871–72. Sándor Petőfi attended it between 1835 and 1838, a memorial plaque by the entrance commemorates this.

After nationalisation, flats were created in the building. Following a decision by the Aszód District Council, a district rural museum opened in 1958 in two ground-floor rooms. As the residents gradually moved out, the entire building complex came under the museum’s use by 1991, and after the change of regime the upper wing was converted with county support.

After the restoration of the listed building and the construction of a new reception building, the new permanent exhibition, which presents the local heritage and that of the Galga valley, opened on 15 March 2026. The modern hall completed in 2025 links the main building with the contemporary art gallery in the former drawing classroom.
