About the museum
Fáskrúðsfjörður was the main base of French seafarers on the Icelandic fishing grounds. Their fishing here was at its height for about fifty years, from around 1860, and Fáskrúðsfjörður was their principal base in Iceland. Many of the seafarers died, and a memorial to them stands by the French cemetery nearby.
The museum is housed in two old buildings built for French seafarers, the Læknishúsið (Doctor's House) and the French Hospital, which are connected by underground tunnels. The buildings were restored and the work was completed in summer 2014. Inside is a modern multimedia exhibition that traces the history of French fishing off Iceland from the 17th century up to the First World War.
The museum is part of the museums of Fjarðabyggð. On the ground floor of the French Hospital is a hotel with the restaurant l’Abri.
