About the museum
The Maritime Museum of East Iceland in Eskifjörður is the only maritime museum in East Iceland and serves the whole region. It opened to the public on 4 June 1983 in Gamla búð (the Old Shop), a former merchant’s house built in 1816.
Gamla búð served many functions after the trading business moved out: first as a storehouse and later as a fish store and a store for fishing gear. Restoration of the building began in 1968, when it was moved further up the plot to make way for road works. The work was completed in 1983, by which time it had been decided to establish a maritime museum in Eskifjörður.
The museum holds objects related to seafaring and the processing of marine catches, as well as trade relics and items from various trades and from medicine in earlier times. It also has exhibition space on the upper floor of Randulffs sjóhús in Eskifjörður, which Norwegian herring fishermen built in the early 20th century. The lower floor of the sea house has a restaurant that operates in summer.
