About the museum
The Íslenska stríðsárasafnið (Icelandic War Years Museum) opened in Reyðarfjörður in 1995 to recreate the era of the occupation of Iceland during the Second World War. Reyðarfjörður was occupied, and the museum focuses on how the occupation touched the daily lives of residents and Icelandic society.
Visitors walk through a Quonset hut and a cinema room from the war years and look at numerous objects and photographs from that time. The museum is at Heiðarvegur and belongs to the museums of Fjarðabyggð.
Every year a festival is held on 1 July to commemorate the events of the occupation in the area.
