About the museum

The Agorà della Scherma was founded in 2012 on the initiative of Cesare Vago, president of Pro Patria Scherma, a fencing club more than a century old whose premises adjoin the museum. It was set up with the support of the Municipality of Busto Arsizio and the Federazione Italiana Scherma (Italian Fencing Federation).

The core of the museum is the Longhi collection, donated by the Florentine psychiatrist Silvio Longhi: hundreds of objects, including foils, sabres and sporting swords, duelling and military swords, bayonets, training equipment for fencers, masks, gloves and plastrons. The museum also has pieces from the personal collection of Nedo Nadi, acquired by the master Giancarlo Toràn, the museum's curator.

Beyond the objects, the collection includes documents, treatises, books and legal texts on duelling, with particular attention to the history of sport fencing from the second half of the 19th century, as well as numerous photographs and films from various periods.
