About the museum

The museum is one of the two private museums of Busto Arsizio and arose from the collection of artworks of the parish of San Michele Arcangelo, begun in 1975. It is housed in parish premises next to the bell tower of the church of San Michele Arcangelo, in Piazzetta don Pio Chieppi.

In 1988 a systematic study of the works began, directed by Lia de Pra Cavalleri, Giuseppe Gualmo and Emanuele Bisterzo, with the collaboration of the Soprintendenza ai Beni Culturali della Lombardia (heritage authority for Lombardy).

The collection includes paintings from the late 16th and the first half of the 17th century, among them the San Carlo blessing Busto, which recalls the cardinal who in 1583 made Busto the seat of a pieve (principal parish church). There are also processional crosses of 16th-century Lombard goldsmiths' work, four codices from the 14th to the 17th century with a musical antiphonary, old prints, detached frescoes with motifs of popular devotion, documentation on the decoration of the church at the beginning of the 20th century, and contemporary works inspired by religion.
