About the museum
The museum belongs to the Società Gallaratese per gli Studi Patri, founded in 1896 to protect and promote the cultural heritage of Gallarate and its territory. Its first initiative was the restoration of the Romanesque church of San Pietro; the finds recovered formed the core of the first Civiche Raccolte, housed in the Palazzo Broletto. In 1914 the Società was recognised as an ente morale (legal entity of public interest).
The present seat, what remains of a Franciscan convent built in 1234 and in particular half of the northern cloister, was donated to the Società on 31 March 1925 and restored from 1911. A new adjoining hall was inaugurated in 1961; after restoration work begun in 1970, the renovated museum was inaugurated in 1972 and opened permanently to the public in December 1973.
The collections include the archaeology section, with prehistoric, protohistoric, Roman and early medieval finds, including a dugout canoe from Lake Monate; the Manica viscontea (Visconti gallery) with views of Gallarate and historic bicycles; a picture gallery with works by Giuseppe De Albertis and sculptures by Adolfo Wildt; the gallery of inscriptions and the cloister garden. The library and historical archive hold volumes, parchments and manuscripts on the area.
