About the museum
The Museo Campano was born from the royal decree of 21 August 1869, which established a commission for the protection of the monuments and antiquities of the province of Terra di Lavoro. It was founded in 1870 on the initiative of the canon Gabriele Iannelli, its first director, and Capua was chosen as its seat; it opened to the public on 31 May 1874.
The seat is Palazzo Antignano, a 15th-century building in the civic Catalan style that incorporates the remains of the Lombard church of San Lorenzo ad Crucem; the portal bears the coats of arms of the Antignano and d'Alagno families. The route also extends to the nearby Convent of the Santissima Concezione. On 9 September 1943 an air raid destroyed much of the city and of the museum itself, but the collections had been saved in advance by the director Luigi Garofano Venosta; the new rooms were rebuilt and reopened between 1945 and 1956.
The heritage includes archaeological, historical, artistic and library material and documents the history of Capua from the Oscans and Etruscans, through the Samnites and Romans, to later periods. Among the best-known collections are the Matres Matutae, the inscriptions of the Mommsen lapidarium, materials from the sanctuary of Diana Tifatina, Campanian vases with red and black figures, medieval and Renaissance sculptures, the picture gallery, and the collections dedicated to the Bourbons and the House of Savoy. The museum also houses a library that can be consulted free of charge.
