About the museum
The Museum of Carriages is housed at the Centro Regionale di Incremento Ippico (Regional Centre for Horse Breeding) in Santa Maria Capua Vetere. The Centre was established around 1853 as the Regio Deposito Cavalli Stalloni (Royal Stallion Depot). Today it is run by the Campania Region and works to protect local horse breeds. Among its facilities is a shed that houses the museum.
The collection brings together well-preserved carriages that were in use at the command of the Caserta Military Garrison. The most important pieces, about ten in number, date from the late 19th century: a wicker-basket carriage of the Victory type, modelled on the one built for Queen Victoria of England; a break with many seats and rear access, similar to a small bus; a coupé for transporting the commanding general and his family; and domatrici from different periods.
Alongside the carriages are numerous wagons used to bring supplies to the institute, harness, various equipment and the farrier’s workshop.
