About the museum
The amphitheatre of Catania was built in the imperial age, probably in the 2nd century AD, on the northern outskirts of the ancient city, in an area previously used as a necropolis. Around the 3rd century it was enlarged to roughly three times its original size, becoming one of the most imposing structures of its time.
In the 5th century, according to Cassiodorus, the Ostrogothic king Theodoric allowed the people of Catania to use it as a quarry for building material, since it had been abandoned. Its blocks were later reused in other buildings in the city, and the monument was largely buried beneath the medieval and modern town.
Today only a small part of the structure is visible, on the western side of Piazza Stesicoro: galleries, passageways and vaults in lava stone and brick. After years of closure, the monument reopened in 2024, managed by the Comune di Catania under an agreement with the Parco archeologico e paesaggistico di Catania e della Valle dell’Aci.
