About the museum

The ancient theatre of Catania stands on the slope of the Montevergine hill, in an area already inhabited in the Neolithic. Its present appearance dates from the 2nd century AD; the local population calls it the “teatro greco” (Greek theatre), although the visible structure is Roman and ancient sources mention a Greek theatre whose location is not entirely clear.

The building, made of lava stone and originally faced with marble, housed performances and public gatherings. Beside the theatre lies the Odeon, a smaller structure used for concerts and music and poetry contests. Over the centuries the area was occupied by houses, which hid the monument until excavations began at the end of the 19th century.

The complex is now managed by the Parco archeologico e paesaggistico di Catania e della Valle dell’Aci, which has its registered office here. Casa Liberti, a historic building that houses finds from the site, also forms part of the area.
