About the museum
The MACS is housed in the Badia Piccola, part of the Monastero di San Benedetto overlooking Via Crociferi, in the baroque heart of Catania. The building is attributed to the architect Giovanni Battista Vaccarini and is linked to the Badia Grande by the Arco di San Benedetto; next to it stands the church of San Benedetto, attached to the monastery and decorated with frescoes.
The museum was founded to enhance Sicily's cultural heritage and to promote Italian and international contemporary art, presenting both emerging talents and established artists. The collections favour a figurative approach and seek to create a dialogue between the art of the past and contemporary art, also in collaboration with other historic sites.
The permanent collection is constantly growing: the museum's website presents the latest acquisitions of various artists. The museum addresses children, young people and adults with workshops and themed routes.
