About the museum
The Pinacoteca of the Città Metropolitana di Catania is housed in the former church of San Michele Minore, in Piazza Manganelli. After the earthquake of 1693 it was one of the first churches rebuilt and reopened for worship. It has a simple rectangular façade, articulated by two pilasters of white Syracuse stone and a portal with a large window; a single-nave interior with four pilasters engaged as columns and a vaulted ceiling; and a restored crypt containing burials of the neighbourhood's dead.
The church is no longer used for worship and is named after the artist Nunzio Sciavarrello, who donated to the Province of Catania, now the Città Metropolitana, a collection of portraits and self-portraits by masters of the 20th century. The authors include Renato Guttuso, Francesco Di Bartolo, Salvatore Fiume, Elio Romano, Consagra, Mino Maccari and Sciavarrello himself; the institution's catalogue lists around 110 works, including paintings, sculptures and an autograph letter by the sculptor Mario Rutelli.
The space, harmonious and intimate, is equipped with an audiovisual system and is also used for cultural initiatives.
