About the museum
Albintimilium stood on the right bank of the Nervia river, in an area already inhabited by the Intemelian Ligurians. It became a Roman municipium in the 1st century BC and reached its greatest prosperity in the Caesarian and Augustan ages, thanks to its strategic position along the Via Iulia Augusta. After the destruction of 68 AD the city was rebuilt under Vespasian, and between the 2nd and 3rd centuries it received new public buildings, including baths, a theatre and an aqueduct.
The settlement was gradually abandoned between the 6th and 7th centuries, when the population moved to the area now known as Ventimiglia Alta. The archaeological area preserves the remains of the Roman city and is now a state cultural site; the Antiquarium on Corso Genova, opposite the Roman theatre, houses the finds from the excavations.
The visit route includes the Antiquarium, the baths, the theatre and the Domus del cavalcavia.
