About the museum
The gallery was founded in 1970, when the painter Giovanni Morscio gave the community of Dolceacqua his own works together with a collection of paintings and watercolours by French and Italian figurative artists. Morscio, born in Dolceacqua in 1887 into a family of flower growers and trained as a painter and decorator in Sanremo, devoted himself above all to flowers and still lifes.
From the 1980s the municipality expanded the collection with works by local artists such as Marcello Cammi and Mario Raimondo, known as “Barbadirame”. The collection, initially housed in the old town hall, was moved to the restored Palazzo Doria Garoscio, donated by Luigina Garoscio, a wealthy woman from Dolceacqua who had emigrated to Argentina.
The museum also recalls the appeal that Dolceacqua held for painters travelling along the Ligurian coast, among them Turner, Corot and Monet.
