About the museum

The museum was conceived and founded by Erio Tripodi, singer, cultural operator and restaurateur, born in Menton to a family of Calabrian emigrants. It stands in Vallecrosia, in the Parco delle Sette Note, in the shadow of a small chapel dedicated to Saint Cecilia, and was inaugurated in 1987 by Luciano Pavarotti, honorary president. It is now run by the Fondazione Erio Tripodi – Museo della Canzone, which develops and promotes Italian song through cultural and educational events.

In the park stands an authentic train from the early 20th century, with the locomotive “Cirilla” and “centoporte” carriages transformed into halls: here the story of humanity's quest to capture and reproduce sound and voice is told. Music boxes, barrel organs, mechanical pianos, carillons, records, microphones, jukeboxes, radios and instruments of every period are on display, all in working order.

A separate carriage houses the Centro studi, with a library, record collection, audio archive and a small conference room. The archive holds tens of thousands of catalogued records and sheet music, and extensive documentation on the Sanremo Music Festival from 1951 onwards.
