About the museum
The Antiquarium di Farneta occupies the sacristy of the Farneta abbey in the municipality of Cortona. The Benedictine monastery, which may date back to the Lombard period, is documented with certainty from 1014. It later passed to the Olivetan monks, who increased its power, but from the 15th century the complex declined and was suppressed in 1799, during the French occupation. Only the abbey church has survived from the ancient monastery.
The collection displays fossil remains of the local fauna from the Pliocene and Villafranchian, including elephant remains, together with Etruscan urns and two 15th-century terracotta statues.
