About the museum
Ancient Apollonia stood about two kilometres north-east of the present-day San Fratello, on a plateau of the Monte Vecchio massif, at about 718 metres above sea level. The city had a regular layout, with rectangular blocks and orthogonal streets adapted to the terrain by means of terracing; the fortification walls date back to the early 3rd century BC.
Excavations have brought to light Hellenistic-Roman houses with opus signinum floors, workshops and warehouses; many spaces were reused in the medieval period. The water supply was ensured by large cisterns, among them a rectangular one, uncovered, on the north-east side of the plateau.
A selection of the finds is displayed in San Fratello, in the former Palazzo Municipale in via Saverio Latteri. The area is managed by the Parco archeologico di Tindari.
