About the museum
The museum is housed in the Benedictine monastery linked to the church of San Teodoro, known as the Badia Piccola, in the historic centre of San Marco d’Alunzio. The church has a Byzantine character, with a Greek-cross plan and an octagonal central space supported by eight large pillars, and it preserves frescoes with the Doctors of the Eastern Church.
The museum is devoted to Byzantine and Norman culture and figurative arts, two periods that shaped the history of the village. Among the finds from the area is a bronze kottabos from the mid-3rd century BC, found in a Hellenistic tomb and now kept in the local Byzantine and Norman museum.
