About the museum
The Museo del bosco in Caronia, in the Nebrodi area, documents the work of the charcoal burners and the stages of charcoal production. The route tells the material culture of this trade and the balance between earth, air, water and fire on which carbonisation depends.
Among the reconstructions are the pagghiaru, the traditional dry-stone shelter covered with broom branches, and the fussuni, the cone-shaped kiln in which wood was baked. One section is also devoted to the stripping of cork oak bark, a process whose product was once exported throughout Europe.
The site is presented as a dispersed museum and visitor centre, with an ethno-anthropological and landscape theme, and offers guided tours.
