About the museum
The museum is housed in the former monastery of the Benedictine Virgins, built in 1559 and connected to the church of Sant’Andrea. The spaces, once in a state of decay, were restored, and the museum was inaugurated in June 2003 as an initiative of the parish community together with the Diocese of Patti, with the aim of enhancing the local artistic and religious heritage. It is run by the parish of Maria SS. Assunta.
The route covers about 350 square metres on two levels. On the first level are small wooden works, the festival platforms (fercoli) of Saint Michael and of the Annunciation, canvases from the 15th to the 18th century, a 16th-century panel attributed to the circle of Antonello da Messina, and a collection of antique books including an incunabulum and rare 16th-century editions. The second level is devoted to liturgical vestments, including chasubles embroidered in gold and silk, and silver furnishings: chalices, monstrances, censers, reliquaries and crosses.
A visit to the museum is ideally completed by a visit to the village’s churches, where the rest of the religious heritage is preserved.
