About the museum

The Nuraghe Mannu archaeological area lies in the territory of Dorgali, alongside the Codula di Fuili and in a commanding position overlooking the whole Gulf of Orosei. The first accounts go back to Antonio Taramelli, who explored the monument in 1927. Despite its name, the nuraghe is a single-tower building of modest size, built of large polyhedral basalt blocks laid in irregular courses; the entrance, facing east, is surmounted by a lintel with a relieving window, a corridor leads to an elliptical chamber with two large niches, and a stairwell led up to the terrace.

Around the nuraghe extends a village covering several hectares, partly buried under collapsed material and lentisk scrub. Since 1994 the Soprintendenza has carried out eight excavation campaigns, with the participation of about 700 volunteers. The finds indicate that the first building phase of the village dates to the Advanced Middle Bronze Age, around 1500 BC, and that the greatest occupation took place between the Late and Final Bronze Age (1200-1000 BC).

Over the collapsed remains of the Nuragic huts, a building with a dentil stele and materials of the 4th century AD was constructed in Roman times. Overall the Roman settlement extends over more than two hectares and remained inhabited until the late imperial period, so much so that the excavation shows the appearance of a true town. The site is managed by the Cooperativa Ghivine.
