About the museum
The Museo archeologico di Dorgali, opened in 1980 in a temporary location, has occupied a former school building in Via Lamarmora since 1987 and is run by the Ghivine cooperative. It collects materials from excavations, surface surveys and chance finds in the area, including the Bue Marino cave, the Nuragic village of Serra Orrios and the settlement of Nuraghe Mannu, as well as collections donated by private individuals and finds gathered by the caving groups of Dorgali and Nuoro.
The display is arranged in three rooms in chronological order, to be visited in sequence and anticlockwise. The first room covers the late Neolithic and the Nuragic age, with the village of Serra Orrios and copies of two bronze figurines from Cala Gonone; the second presents Nuragic and Roman materials, including the glass-paste necklaces from the Ispinigoli cave and a small Roman bronze steelyard; the third is dedicated to the Roman and Late Antique periods.
Among the most interesting finds are a lead ingot of about 30 kg stamped with the name of the Planii family, industrialists active at Carthago Nova (Cartagena) between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, and a copy of a military diploma of AD 96. The route “Dorgali in 20 reperti” also presents twenty representative objects, from a Neolithic axe to a 20th-century jug.
