About the museum
The Nuragic village of Serra Orrios stands on the basalt plateau of Gollei, in the territory of Dorgali, about ten kilometres from the town, among rugged hills, ancient olive trees and Mediterranean scrub. It is one of the best-preserved Nuragic complexes: a village-sanctuary built entirely of basalt blocks which, in its size and organisation, represents a proto-urban settlement resulting from planning.
Archaeological exploration began in 1936 with Doro Levi, then superintendent of antiquities of Sardinia, and lasted three years after the discovery of two particular buildings, temples A and B, which he identified as megaron temples of the Mycenaean type. The settlement comprises about one hundred circular huts with a plinth of courses of stones, only partly explored, grouped in three blocks around courtyards with wells and cisterns. Particularly notable is the so-called hut 49, perhaps an assembly hut, with a stone bench and vestibule. The village also includes two megalithic burials and two sacred areas, each with a megaron temple and enclosure, perhaps linked to the cult of water.
The life of the village begins in the Early Bronze Age (16th century BC) and ends in the Iron Age (9th–6th centuries BC), with the greatest intensity between the Late and Final Bronze Age. The finds from the excavations, including pottery, weaving tools and casting moulds, are kept in the Museo archeologico di Dorgali.
