About the museum
The museum is dedicated to Salvatore Fancello, a painter, sculptor and ceramicist born in Dorgali in 1916 who died on the Albanian front, at Bregu Rapit, in 1941. Trained at the Istituto superiore per le industrie artistiche in Monza, he then worked between Albisola, Milan and Ivrea, and took part in the Triennale di Milano of 1936 and 1940. In 1942 the Pinacoteca di Brera held an exhibition in his memory; his remains were interred in the cemetery of Dorgali in 1962.
The civic collection holds drawings by Fancello, including the series with cows and little birds, cats, horses, moon and sun, and the long “disegno ininterrotto” (uninterrupted drawing) of 1938, a scroll of about seven metres with country scenes and fantastic animals. His ceramic production, with the majolica bestiary and the nativity scene, is documented in the artist's biography presented by the museum.
The museum is part of the cultural services of the Comune di Dorgali and is run together with the village's archaeological museum.
