About the museum
The basilica, dedicated to the Virgin and to Saints Hermagoras and Fortunatus, has its roots in the years immediately after 313, when the Edict of Milan allowed the Christian community to build freely its first place of worship. After the destruction of the first church, the seat of the bishop, the people of Aquileia rebuilt it four times, superimposing the new buildings on the remains of the previous ones.
The main phases are the Theodorian phase (first half of the 4th century), the post-Theodorian north and south phases (4th–5th centuries), the Massenzian phase (9th century) and the Popponian phase (first half of the 11th century). Between the 14th and 15th centuries the roofing was rebuilt with pointed arches and a new roof.
The ticket for the complex allows visitors to see the present basilica with its 4th-century mosaics, the frescoed crypt of the 9th century, the Theodorian north mosaic hall (excavation crypt), the baptistery with the Sud-Halle, the domus of the episcopal palace and the Domus di Tito Macro (house of Titus Macer).
