About the museum
The lapidarium is located in the Sant’Eufemia basilica complex, the heart of Grado’s old town, in a small atmospheric room behind the apse of the cathedral. The basilica, of early Christian origin, was consecrated by Patriarch Elia in 579 and has never interrupted its religious services; excavations have revealed older places of worship beneath it, including the late 4th-century hall and the small basilica of Petrus.
It is reached from the Salutatorium, the mosaic-floored space where the patriarch received the clergy, through a modern corridor. The chronological display presents hundreds of fragments of marble decoration, inscriptions, sarcophagi and capitals found in the castrum of Grado, from the pagan period to early Christianity, and on to the Byzantine and medieval periods.
The largest group dates from the early Christian and early medieval periods, between the 4th and 9th centuries, but there are also fine examples of Roman sculpture, such as the two figured sarcophagus fronts from the early 3rd century and a portrait of a magistrate on a stele from the early 4th century. The complex also includes the octagonal baptistery with its 6th-century mosaic and a courtyard with Roman sarcophagi discovered in 1860.
