About the museum

The forum was the centre of political, administrative and social life in Aquileia, a Roman colony founded in 181 BC. An initial layout of the square dates back already to the 2nd century BC; in the first half of the 1st century AD it took on the appearance that can still be seen today, with porticoes on at least three sides.

The square, 141 metres long and 55 wide, is entirely paved with slabs of Aurisina stone. Of the eastern portico some columns with Composite capitals from the second half of the 2nd century AD survive, re-erected and integrated with brick in the 1930s. On the architrave ran a balustrade decorated with heads of Jupiter Ammon and Medusa, recalling the extent of Rome’s dominion from West to East.

To the south of the forum a long stretch of the decumanus of Aratria Galla can be seen, the road that ran alongside the civil basilica, a large judicial building constructed in the Augustan age and today legible only in small part. Among the most important documents found in the area is the inscription of Tito Annio, linked to the colonists who arrived in Aquileia in 169 BC. The area is part of the Aquileia site, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and is managed by the Fondazione Aquileia.
