Photographs by Luca Berti of landscapes and portraits of the Ridnaun Valley and Monteneve. The images tell of the people who live and work in the mountains and of the traces left by mining.
Ridanna’s mining history is tied to that of Monteneve. From the mid-15th century the Ridanna valley became important as the shortest route for carrying the lead ore mined at Monteneve to the smelting works of northern Tyrol; for centuries pack animals carried it over the Monteneve saddle, at 2,700 m above sea level. After the opening of the Brenner railway (1867), large industrial plants arose at Masseria, including an ore-processing plant for zinc, housing for miners and a very long system for transporting the ore by rail, 27 km long, to the station at Vipiteno.
Between 1924 and 1926 the ore-processing plant was modernised to the latest standards, and the rail transport was replaced by a cableway. After the fire of 1967, which destroyed the miners’ village of San Martino at Monteneve, the entire workforce moved to Ridanna. The miners reached the deposits through the Poschhaus tunnel, going up by cable car and then by a small train. The mine remained in operation until May 1985.
Today the Ridanna site is part of the Museo provinciale miniere dell’Alto Adige. Visitors see the still well-preserved ore-processing plant, whose machines are set in motion during the tour, the teaching gallery, the permanent exhibition on the lives of miners and, in summer, tours of the deposit’s tunnels.
