About the museum
For thousands of years, the Timmelsjoch has linked the Passeier Valley in South Tyrol with the Ötz Valley. The pass is first documented in 1241, and a find from the La Tène period shows that it was already used in pre-Christian times. In the Middle Ages, traders and the famous Ötztal porters (Kraxenträger) used the route to exchange livestock, flax and bacon for wine and brandy. Later, a modern High Alpine Road replaced the old pack trail.
The pass museum stands right on the border between Tyrol and South Tyrol at the summit. Like an erratic boulder, the building juts out from the Tyrolean side onto South Tyrolean territory, underlining the cross-border character of the entire "Timmelsjoch Erfahrung". Inside, a cave-like room, the "Eishöhle" (ice cave), commemorates the pioneers who built the road at this altitude.
The museum is one station of the Timmelsjoch Erfahrung, a chain of architectural sculptures along the route. Other stations such as "Schmuggler", "Fernrohr", "Steg" or "Granat" tell stories about nature, smuggling, trade and everyday life in the region; on the South Tyrolean side, the museum "Timmel Transit" complements the offer. All stations are free to visit. The pass museum provides information on, among other things, the history of the High Alpine Road, the origin of the name Timmelsjoch and a pre-Christian garment clasp.
