About the museum
The Villandro mine, on the Pfundererberg, is documented from the 12th century, when it was donated to the Augustinian monastery of Novacella. Its period of greatest activity was the 16th century: miners extracted silver, copper, lead, zinc and sulphur, and the mountain is crossed by a dense network of mineral veins and galleries. In modern times the activity came to an end and the mine was abandoned.
Today part of the galleries has been restored and made visitable. The Elisabetta gallery (Elisabethstollen), open to visitors since 2005, shows the work and life of the miners; the San Lorenzo gallery (Lorenzstollen) can also be walked on a longer route.
Visits always take place with a guide. The temperature in the gallery is constant at around 8 °C, so warm clothing and sturdy shoes are necessary.
