About the museum
The museum grew out of the collection of Paul Fischnaller, a passionate mineral hunter who in 1994 placed his collections at the disposal of the community. The museum opened on 18 September 1999 and the following year, with the working group that had formed around the collection, the association Verein Mineralienmuseum Teis was founded. It runs the museum with the aim of keeping it alive and understandable and of letting visitors experience the Tiso spheres with all their senses.
The building was enlarged and reopened in 2020 (the enlarged building was inaugurated on 4 October 2020). The exhibition, all on the ground floor, presents the Tiso spheres, which give the village its fame, together with rock crystal and Alpine minerals and the special mineralogical pieces from the collection of a passionate mineral hunter from South Tyrol; a short introductory film explains how minerals form.
The museum is complemented by a shop with minerals, jewellery and souvenirs, special exhibitions and guided tours; with the collector it is also possible to search for Tiso spheres on dedicated excursions.
