About the museum
In 1649 Baldassarre Longhena received from the Bon family the commission to build a new palace on the Grand Canal; work began in 1667. When the architect died in 1682 the site stopped, with the façade on the Grand Canal and the first floor already completed.
In 1751 Giambattista Rezzonico bought the building and entrusted its completion to Giorgio Massari: between 1752 and 1758 the second floor, the staircase, the entrance hall and the ballroom were built. The Rezzonico family died out in 1810, and the palace changed owners several times. In 1888 it was bought by Robert Barrett “Pen” Browning, son of the poets Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning; his father had died in the palace in December 1889.
In 1935 the palace passed to the Comune di Venezia, and on 25 April 1936 it opened as the Museo del Settecento Veneziano (Museum of 18th-Century Venice). The route is spread over several floors: on the first floor, rooms with paintings, sculptures, furnishings and frescoed ceilings; on the second floor the Portego dei Dipinti with two early canvases by Canaletto, the room of Pietro Longhi and the detached frescoes by Giandomenico Tiepolo from the villa at Zianigo; on the third floor the 18th-century pharmacy “Ai Do San Marchi” and the Pinacoteca Egidio Martini. The museum is part of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia.
