About the museum
The Galleria di Palazzo Cini was created as a house museum in the Venetian residence of Vittorio Cini (1885–1977), an industrialist, politician and philanthropist who was also one of the greatest Italian collectors of the 20th century. The palace, at San Vio, brings together two 16th-century buildings, Palazzo Foscari and Palazzo Grimani, bought by Cini between 1919 and 1920. Between 1956 and 1958 the architect Tomaso Buzzi redesigned its interiors, leaving the oval spiral staircase and the neo-Rococo salon in which the Cozzi porcelain service is displayed.
After Cini’s death his daughter Yana Alliata di Montereale donated to the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, between 1981 and 1982, part of her father’s collections together with some rooms of the palace, so as to preserve the link between the works and their original setting. The gallery opened on 21 September 1984, with the display curated by Federico Zeri. In 1989 the collection of Ferrarese Renaissance paintings of the heirs of Ylda Cini Guglielmi di Vulci was added on permanent deposit, and in 2015 the heirs enriched the route with new works and furnishings.
The route is laid out over two floors: the first recreates the atmosphere of the collector’s residence, while the second hosts temporary exhibitions. The collection includes Tuscan paintings from the 13th to the 16th century, including works by Filippo Lippi, Beato Angelico, Botticelli, Piero di Cosimo and Pontormo; a section of Ferrarese art with Cosmè Tura, Ercole de’ Roberti and Dosso Dossi; and Gothic ivories, Renaissance enamels on copper, sculptures and decorative arts.
