About the museum
The Scuola dei Carmini was founded on 1 March 1594 and recognised as a Scuola Piccola in 1597; in 1767 it became a Scuola Grande, and in 1797 it was the last of Venice’s eight Scuole Grandi (major confraternities) to be founded and recognised. Suppressed by Napoleonic decrees in 1807, it was later re-established and is still active.
The seat, between the Campo dei Carmini and the Campo Santa Margherita, arose from a design approved in 1627 and attributed to Francesco Caustello. The works lasted about fifty years, and the seat was inaugurated in October 1638, with the chapel, the Sala Capitolare and the archive already completed. In 1668 the Scuola bought the pharmacy building, and the completion, directed by Baldassare Longhena, took place in 1669-1670.
In 1739 the chapter commissioned from Giambattista Tiepolo a new ceiling for the Sala Capitolare, made up of nine canvases: in the centre the Apparition of the Virgin to Saint Simon Stock, around it scenes linked to the scapular and the Virtues. The side canvases were completed in 1743 and the central one in 1749. The Assunta by Padovanino was moved to the Sala dell’Albergo.
The route includes the chapel, the staircase, the Sala dell’Archivio, the Sala dell’Albergo, the Sala Capitolare and the small Stanza del Tesoro, with silverware, ex-votos and the 17th-century Mariegola (the confraternity’s statutes).
