About the museum
The chapel dates from the 15th century and adjoins the present church and convent, occupied by the Camaldolese since the 12th century. It stands in the Porta Sole district and is what remains of the 16th-century church, rebuilt and enlarged in the 18th century.
Inside is the fresco painted by Raffaello Sanzio for the Camaldolese monks between 1505 and 1508. The upper part depicts the Trinity, surrounded by angels and cherubim and flanked by saints of the Camaldolese and Benedictine orders. Called to Rome by Pope Giulio II to work on the Stanze Vaticane, Raffaello did not complete the work, and the Camaldolese turned to Pietro Vannucci, known as il Perugino, who concluded it with a procession of saints in the lower register.
At the centre of the fresco is a polychrome terracotta Madonna and Child attributed to Leonardo Del Tasso. The work is the last that Perugino made in the Umbrian capital, where he died a few years later, and the only one by Raffaello still in the city; it sets the grace of Perugino beside the expressiveness of the young Raffaello.
