About the museum
Palazzo Sorbello, in the historic centre of Perugia, a few steps from the Cathedral and the Pozzo Etrusco, dates from the 17th century and was known as Palazzo Eugeni. In 1734 it was chosen from among the city’s noble palaces to host Charles III of Bourbon, the future king of the Two Sicilies and later of Spain, during a stage of his journey. At the end of the 18th century it was bought by the marquis Uguccione III Bourbon di Sorbello, whose family, a branch of the marquises of Monte Santa Maria, had long served the Medici and Savoy courts.
After the purchase, the rooms on the first floor, the piano nobile, were renewed in their decoration, especially the frescoes on the vaults. These rooms, once the apartments of family members, now house the art collections of the Bourbon di Sorbello: a picture gallery, prints, Italian and Chinese porcelain, manuscripts and printed books, and embroidery made by the women workers of the Scuola Ricami Ranieri di Sorbello.
Visitors are welcomed into a hall with a frescoed vault, where a video and some display cases introduce the history of the marquises and the collections. From here a panoramic terrace opens, with a view over Perugia and the Assisi valley, where there is also a vertical garden. The museum is run by the Fondazione Ranieri di Sorbello.
