About the museum
The idea of a science centre for the city of Perugia was born in 1995, as part of a museum network project promoted by the councillorship for cultural heritage. The original name, Perugia Officina della Scienza, was changed in 1998 to POST (Perugia Officina per la Scienza e la Tecnologia), an acronym adopted as the brand. The executive project was delivered in 1999 and was financed also with funds linked to the Jubilee of 2000 and to the law on the dissemination of scientific culture.
The venue is the former monastery of San Tommaso, later a municipal workshop and car park, renovated by spring 2003. The centre was inaugurated on 17 December 2003 as an interactive science museum, where the public approaches science and technology through discovery and direct experience. Since 2005 it has been run by the POST Foundation, established by the municipality and the Province of Perugia; in 2006 the cloister was covered with an openable glass roof, giving the museum a large multipurpose hall.
In addition to the exhibit hall, the museum has an immersive space with a 360° projection for about 40 people, accessible also to blind visitors, and an interactive area for children. An important part of the activity is aimed at schools, with more than two hundred experiment protocols, workshops for children and teenagers, and science birthday parties.
