About the museum
Casa Carducci is the home in which the poet Giosuè Carducci lived from May 1890 until his death in 1907. The building dates from the first decade of the 16th century, when it was built as the oratory and church of the Confraternity of Santa Maria della Pietà, known as del Piombo. Destroyed by fire in 1712, it was rebuilt, and in 1725 it received a new bell tower. After the confraternity was suppressed in 1798, it was sold to private owners and converted into a dwelling.
Carducci was not the owner but a tenant. He chose the upper floor for its quiet position and for the space suitable for his library, which already held over thirty thousand volumes, while his daughters lived on the ground floor with their families. The house retains its original furnishings and fittings and, also thanks to the commitment of Margherita di Savoia, became a national monument.
Today Casa Carducci comprises the house museum, the memorial garden, the poet’s literary archive and a library of over 40,000 bibliographic units. Since 1996 it has also housed the libraries and archives of Bolognese scholars and intellectuals associated with 20th-century literature. Visits are always accompanied, and the ticket also covers the Museo civico del Risorgimento, on the ground floor.
