About the museum

The museum was opened on 12 June 1893 in a room of Palazzo Galvani, on the initiative of the former Garibaldi volunteer Raffaele Belluzzi, who was its first director. It arose on the wave of success of the Tempio del Risorgimento set up for the Esposizione Emiliana of 1888, and was enriched with relics donated by citizens.

During the First World War it collected materials about the war and about the fallen citizens of Bologna. Closed in 1943, it reopened in 1975 with a new display designed above all for schools. From 1990 it has been housed on the ground floor of Casa Carducci, a 16th-century building in Piazza Carducci where the poet Giosuè Carducci lived from 1890 until his death in 1907.

The route, in chronological order, includes documents, uniforms, weapons, paintings, sculptures and photographs from the Napoleonic age (1796) to 1918, with particular attention to Bologna and its territory. On the upper floor visitors can see Carducci's apartment, which remains largely intact, and his library. The visit is completed by a stamp collection and a memorial garden.
